Scientific studies and technical developments are carried out within the framework of the HOMONIM project conducted in partnership between Météo-France and Shom with grant from the Ministry of Ecological Transition. The main objective of the project is to continuously improve storm tide and coastal waves forecast capabilities to help better determine which areas may be affected and hazardous.
The models developed, whose results are displayed on this portal, are then primarily operated by Météo-France to feed the French national waves and storm-tide awareness system.

Glossary:
- Mean sea level would be the sea level at rest (absence of tides and atmospheric effects (no wind, average atmospheric pressure of 1013 hectoPascal = 760 mm of mercury). Not to be confused with the height of water in relation to chart datum
- Storm surge: in the presence of meteorological event (low atmospheric pressure and strong winds) or oceanographic phenomena (waves, swell, currents...), the sea level can deviate significantly from the value expected in the absence of these disturbances when only influenced by tides. When the sea level is higher than the maximum predicted tide, it is called a storm surge.
The magnitude of the surge depends on the location (seabed topography, currents, exposure to waves and swell, etc.) and the meteorological conditions (wind and atmospheric pressure).
When a storm surge occurs in the vicinity of high water during spring tides, there is a significant risk of coastal flood on low-lying vulnerable areas.

The Shom uses a 2D barotropic version of the HYCOM model ( https://hycom.org/) to compute water level /storm surge forecasts.
The configurations have been set up on 4 domains (European Atlantic, Mediterranean sea, Caribbean and Guyana, SW Indian ocean).
These models have been adapted by Shom to address coastal issues by taking into account, the tide forcing, optimized parameterizations and dedicated high resolution bathymetry (from 500 m for regional coverage to 100m for coastal DTMs) using Litto3D surveys by airborne LIDAR.
Water level forecasts are computed by using curvilinear grids at variable resolution ranging from 1.5km offshore to 500m on the coast for the French mainland coast and the Antilles and Guyana coast. A downscaling process is implemented in Indian ocean to reach a resolution of 200m to 800m on around La Réunion and Mayotte islands.
Meteorological forcing: (i) ARPEGE model (EURAT01 grid) from Météo-France for French mainland area, (ii) AROME models (CARAIB0025, GUYANE0025, INDIEN0025 grids) from Météo-France and (ii) CEP-IFS model (GLOB0125 grid) from ECMWF for overseas areas.
Open boundary forcing: NEA tidal atlas or LEGOS FES according to the considered area.
Configurations of HYCOM2D setup depending on the considered area:
- Configuration HYCOM-ATL: Version 4, june 2017.
- Configuration HYCOM-MED: Version 2, january 2015.
- Configuration HYCOM ANT-GUY: Version 2, may 2020.
- Configuration HYCOM-IND: Version 2, december 2019.
