3D hydrodynamic model for the evolution of the ocean
Shom uses HYCOM 3D (Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model) digital models to model changes to the ocean environment (currents, temperature, salinity). These HYCOM 3D models include a scalable (space and time) vertical grid, which is particularly suitable for the coastal regions and physical phenomena modelled (particularly the transition from a deep sea zone to the continental shelf, and the presence of frontal zones).
These models were adapted to coastal models at Shom, particularly by integrating tides and the effects of rivers. These models focus on changes and variability in the different physical processes affecting coastal areas (continental shelves and slopes), such as tidal fronts, river plumes, tides and internal waves, upwelling and the dynamics of the mixed layer at an hourly frequency and with high spatial resolution (1/60 deg for the Biscay Channel model).

In addition to the effective modelling of general water circulation in the ocean basins, for which the HYCOM model was originally designed, thanks to the digital developments applied by Shom (review of time-based digital diagrams, consideration of the free surface, boundary conditions, etc.) and the properties of the hybrid vertical coordinates, HYCOM is ideal for modelling regional and coastal processes such as: - the barometric tide and shallow waters, - the internal tide, - thermohaline fronts, - vortex dynamics, - mixed layer dynamics with the homogeneous zone and the thermocline.

Shom HYCOM 3D models are processed on a daily basis using the Météo-France computing system and provide a daily analysis (D-1) and five days of forecasts (from D to D+4). The depth of the forecast depends on the forcing mechanisms used. The following forcing mechanisms are used: Meteorology: Météo France Oceanography HR Arpège model (open borders): Mercator Ocean Hydrology PSY4 model: SCHAPI river flows.
The Hycom layer provided on-line via data.shom.fr is broken down as follows to limit data volumes:
HYCOM3D-SURF: a netcdf file per analysis date or forecast containing 24 hourly deadlines for all surface parameters (extraction of the first layer of the 3D model)
HYCOM3D-MJ: a netcdf file per analysis date or forecast with a deadline, representing the daily average for all parameters (this average value is valid for the date in question, with deadlines from 00 to 23:00 centred at 12:00, but adjusted to 11:30 UTC). The layer is reprojected on a vertical Z grid with 50 levels: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1250, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000.
